Kindergarten Teacher Requirements - Start a Kindergarten Teaching Career

Sidney Landers

Kindergarten and Elementary School teachers perform a substantial role in the development and growth of young kids. The things they learn about, discover, and encounter during this period is sure to have a huge effect on his or her potential future accomplishments in both education as well as their day to day lifestyles. If you consider yourself to be a person who enjoys young children and has a love for educating and teaching, a Kindergarten teaching career might be perfect for you. Over the next few paragraphs we will take a look at the requirements and steps you can follow if you someday want to have your own Kindergarten classroom.

Generally speaking, most current Kindergarten teachers follow the conventional path to a career in education. First, you need to research local or online schools and find an education program that suits your needs. There are many schools that offer terrific education degree programs. The key is to collect information from a variety of schools - do some research - and choose the degree program that best fits your current schedule and lifestyle. These education and teaching degree programs prepare you for your first teaching job. As well as the core college classes like mathematics, science, literature, and economics you will also take classes like teaching methodologies, philosophy of education, psychology of learning and other courses related to education and teaching. In addition, you will also be required to spend a semester of student or supervised teaching and pass a series of teacher certification exams like the Praxis I, Praxis, II, and Praxis III.

All states in the US require that public school teachers possess a bachelor's degree and be certified or licensed by the state they will be teaching in.

The education degree program you choose will prepare you to receive a license or certification to teach in your current state of residence. If you currently possess a bachelor's degree, some states offer alternative procedures to help in obtaining a license and in many cases, private schools do not require teachers to be certified or licensed at all. If you have a bachelor's degree but still need to acquire college level education courses, states may make available an alternative route to certification that can allow you to be hired with pay while you obtain a valid license. In cases like this, the teacher will usually be hired under a temporary or provisional license and will have to obtain the required education related credits in an agreed upon period of time. During this provisional period, the new teacher is supervised by an experienced education or administrator.

Kindergarten teachers wear many different hats. You will be required to not only coordinate hand-on play and activities, but to also introduce and teach subjects like math, language, science, social studies, art, and more as you get your kids ready for first grade and beyond. You will be responsible for planning and implementing appropriate curriculum, management of the learning environment, classroom and behavior management issues, assessment of development, and legal and professional issues of the Kindergarten teacher.
