Energy Consultant and Energy Broker Career Path: Is It Right For You?

Michelle Kulp

For decades, the utility companies were the only game in town--they were a giant monopoly! Similar to when MCI took Ma Bell (AT&T) to court and the telecommunications industry deregulated, the same is happening in the electric and gas industry. As a result of deregulation, the government has required the utilities to eliminate their generation plants, either through sale or through transfer to a non-regulated business unit. This forced both the suppliers and the utility to use the wholesale energy market to procure power.

Consequently, consumers are free to choose any electricity (and/or gas) supplier they would like. What that means is that a huge opportunity has been created for average people, without experience, to become Energy Consultants (Energy Brokers) to help residents and businesses choose a lower rate by choosing an outside supply company.

Is becoming an Energy Consultant the right career path for you?

Here are some questions to ask yourself to find out the answer: Do you enjoy helping others? Are you the type of person when you see a good movie or read a good book or eat at a good restaurant and you love to tell others about it? Do you like saving money? Would you like sharing with others how to save money? Are you ambitious? Are you interested in creating a passive stream of income? Are you willing to spend a few hours a week on a part-time business? Are you a natural networker?

If you answered "Yes" to most of the questions above, then becoming an Energy Broker is good fit for you!

As a result of the economy going South, many people are looking for creative or alternative ways to earn extra money. Becoming an Energy Broker is a great choice because you are essentially in business for yourself, but not by yourself. You can work when you want to, as much as you want to, as hard as you want to and you can work at your own pace. Depending on your financial goals, you have the opportunity to make a 5, 6 or even a 7 figure income as an Energy Broker.

You don't have to be an experienced "salesperson" to be successful as an Energy Broker either because you are not "selling" anything, you are simply "telling" people how to save money on a bill they have to pay anyway. Let me ask you this: How many people do you know that don't have electricity? I thought so. In many States such as Maryland and Pennsylvania, only 5-10% of residents have made the switch to an outside supplier so the market is ripe with opportunities to make a great income as an Energy Broker.

If you are truly looking to create your own financial destiny, then becoming an Energy Broker is a great choice. There are many suppliers you can work for, but I must warn you that many of them charge an exorbitant amount of money to become an Energy Broker; in fact, hundreds of dollars are being charged by some outside suppliers as well as ongoing monthly fees. You shouldn't have to "pay" a company to be an Energy Broker.

North American Power is a outside supplier that does not charge outrageous fees or make profits from people signing up to become Brokers. They have a nominal fee for a background check and that is it. They give you all the training and tools you need to be successful!

Becoming an Energy Broker is a great choice and choosing a solid company to be affiliated with is another smart choice!
