Career Options For Those With A Math Degree Are Widespread

Natasha Bright

Are you one of the gifted persons that can look at a group of numbers and right away see their relationship to one another? Does calculus excite you? When given a question about which train arrives first, you know the answer before the end of the question? However, although you have this amazing ability, the outlook for job opportunities is not great. Many times you have wanted to go back and earn your degree in math, but have hesitated because you do not know what you could do with this degree besides teaching, and that just isn't you.

First of all, don't get discouraged! If you want to test the waters, there are many degree programs available through the internet which makes it very convenient by allowing you to study from home and keep your job. Your paycheck is extremely important if you want to continue eating and have a roof over your head!

It may not be the easiest path to choose, but because not too many students major in this area, it still remains a strong and solid profession in which advancement is good along with a high earning potential. Most career counselors recommend that students take courses in computer science or economics when majoring in math.

Mathematicians are many times called upon to solve economic, physics, engineering and business problems through the use of algorithms, mathematical theory and computer techniques which make them a vital aspect in the business world. They basically fall into two groups; the theoretical mathematician, who develops new principles of math, and the applied mathematicians, who use mathematical modeling to solve practical problems in areas such as business or the government.

Other areas that mathematicians are used in are as an actuary, which works in the insurance industry to resolve issues with insurance rates. This profession is closely monitored and advancement depends upon passing a series of exams specific to this occupation.

We have all quoted statistics at one time or another, but do we really understand from where they are derived from? It is through the interpretation of data collected by mathematicians who explore and identify patterns which are used to decide either a course of action as with market research or medical advancements when exploring possible new treatments or techniques.

Although, you have decided a long time ago that teaching was not what you wanted, through returning to school for your degree in math, you might change your mind. Math is a very important part of every child's education and it needs good, dedicated teachers that recognize the need to make it exciting for their students. The job opportunities in the teaching of math are better than in other teaching positions, such as in history. If teaching on a higher level interests you, you will need to obtain a Master's degree to be considered for employment by a college or university; however, this too can be achieved online with the internet.
