How To Overcome Career Burnout Blues

How to Overcome Career Burnout Blues

70

Think about the last time you enjoyed yourself at work. Can't remember? You may be suffering from career burnout--a condition characterized by prolonged stress, depression, and a lack of motivation resulting from job dissatisfaction. If you're planning to stick it out until the economy turns around, consider this: The results can be disastrous. According to the American Psychological Association, burnout can lead to extended periods of depression, anxiety, and susceptibility to illness. In time, you face a higher likelihood of stroke, heart attack, and mental breakdown.

Not only that but your job performance is likely to suffer, diminishing your chances for promotion or raises, and before too long your apathy results in job loss.So for the sake of your health and well-being, face the burnout blues and take action.Step 1: Evaluate Your Current SituationFirst, be honest about your needs. How much autonomy do you require--do you have it? Is there room for the growth you want with your current employer? Do you get along with your coworkers, and is that important to you? Do you believe in, or even care about, the product or service your current employer provides? Is the job too hard for you, or too easy? Are you simply overworked?Try working within your current situation to address the problem. Discuss your job description with your boss. Perhaps ask for a new creative project or responsibility, or work with him or her to eliminate tedious or burdensome tasks that aren't actually your responsibility. A proactive approach demonstrates your commitment, which might bring positive results.Step #2: Make Time for YourselfIf you're like the majority of Americans, you won't use all your allotted vacation time this year--big mistake. According to a study by the Families and Work Institute, overworked employees make more mistakes, and they tend to experience more depression and health problems. A few days away from work can be invaluable.Maybe you can recharge your batteries in small ways every week. The benefits of exercise, physically and mentally, can be huge; join a walking group, yoga class, or gym. Channel your energies into a hobby or class; join a book club, take cooking classes, garden, take dance lessons, or learn a foreign language.Volunteering is also a great way to spend your time. It's enormously satisfying to serve others, and could eventually lead you toward other career opportunities by providing you with new skills and networking opportunities.Step #3: Plan Your EscapeEven in the current economy, you have options. First, there are colleges and universities. Returning to school to complete a degree or earn a certificate could do wonders for you. It enhances your resume, making you more appealing to potential employers. It gives you a chance to focus on a positive future, even while you continue working at your current job. It boosts your networking opportunities. You'll even earn student tax credits.Plus, you can explore one of many rapidly growing industries. Could you work independently as a consultant in your current field? The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says consultancy is among the fastest growing (and highest paying) occupations today. Also on this list are healthcare, education, human resources, accounting, and the leisure and hospitality sector.A slow economy doesn't mean you should have to suffer career burnout. Take steps today to overcome it. Your health and happiness depend on it.

Career Development - Multi Heading Is a New Approach to Problem Solving

Team work always was an important component for task solving. Since not very long ago team approach is being applied also to self-managing groups. Such groups combined of people from different departments does not have dedicated team leader. All decision making is done by all members of the team during brain storming meetings etc. Such approach allows faster response to arising problems without involving any level of management staff. This is proven to be successful trick for increasing productivity.

However, there is still a need for a manager, who will oversee development process and make corrections if intended line of work is going aside from the intended result. For successful career building you need not only to work in a team, but also to be actual part of it. This means sharing success and glory with other members and also ability to withstand criticism and improve self.

Full time employees, part time, sub-contractors, external consultants can be found working together on specific project. Responsibility and tasks for each individual in the past were strictly set and there was no place to change those. Now areas of responsibility become softer and overlay each other. And it raises a new task for managers - how to stimulate such uneven motivated groups of people to succeed.

Today there is only one person who can make plans for your career and it is of course yourself. No one, not your boss or colleagues, nor astrologist can write such career development plan for you. You must do it yourself. Describe targets and steps which are to be taken in order to reach those. Imagine yourself as a General Manager for your career. You can have advisors; you can even follow advisors opinions. But there is only one person to make strategic decisions in career development and it is you.

You have to set a great goal for your career. Don't make it very specific if you are at the very beginning. You can't know where you will end up in 25-30 years. Your goals have to be some general but clearly describe the altitude you are going to climb. Decide on how to measure your success. Is it going to be your annual compensation or maybe number of summer houses in Hamptons? Or just personal satisfaction by your success... You have to set somehow exact measuring scale for your career.

Manage Yourself For The Career You Want

Manage Yourself for the Career You Want

Cecile Peterkin

"Your past cannot be changed, but you can change tomorrow by your actions today."- David McNally

The career you want doesn't drop in your lap prefabricated the way it used to be. To have the career you want, you have to design and initiate your own path. In the past, on-the-job training was a popular means of creating the perfect employee. Businesses had the time and resources to teach workers what they needed to know, in order to develop a career with their company. Today, as companies are downsizing and restructuring to remain competitive, career-minded individuals must be that much better than others vying for the same position; and, they must be prepared to hit the ground running. You have to go after the job you want.

Career Tips

While career guidance is beneficial, the ultimate decisions are up to you. A career is more than simply a job. It's not flipping burgers at the local fast food restaurant, until something better comes along. A career is a lifelong pursuit of professional success. It helps define who you are, and where your values lie. It gives your life purpose and meaning. It also happens to provide a paycheck.

If you really want a career, and not just a job, here are some suggestions to help facilitate your success:

* Know your personal and professional goals * Keep a portfolio of your best work * Keep track of your successes * Commit to lifelong learning * Invest time and money in developing your career * Establish an advisory board * Find a mentor * Network

You can't sit back and wait for your career to tack off. If you want to be a leader in your chosen occupation, you need to make your success happen.

Career Management

An expert in career guidance will provide suggestions based upon experience. He/she may even develop a personalized list of objectives you need, to put your career on the fast track. But, it's you that will do the hard work and provide the initiative necessary for a successful outcome.

For example, only you know your personal and professional goals. You must recognize your own potential, adapt to changes when necessary, and do what it takes to continually build your career. Today, a college degree is simply not enough. Everyone has to have an education, in order to get a meaningful job. You need to recognize the education necessary to get your foot in the proverbial door. Then, you need to go above and beyond the competition. You will always have to consider how best to invest your time and money, in order to advance your career.

You will also need to keep track of the advancements and changes in your career field. Networking can keep you in the "know" and make sure that others know about you. Developing an advisory board can boost your credibility and convey that you are dedicated to advancing in your career, even if it means accepting change or going back to school. You are your own best tool for success.

In short, career management is not a job you can outsource. You need to manage yourself for the career you want.

Career Advice - 4 Tactics To Accelerate Your Career

Posted on 6 August, 2012

Career Advice - 4 Tactics To Accelerate Your Career

Ramon Greenwood

It's surprising how often ambitious men and women fail to employ four basic tactics in their pursuit of career success. They are easy to apply; they are common sense in action. There are just two requirements. One, you are sincere in your feelings. Two, you must dampen your ego.

Job Tip 1. Admit Mistakes

Everybody makes mistakes. Those who step up to take responsibility for their mistakes and those who learn from them turn their errors into career pluses. Those who deny their mistakes and let others take the blame lose. The sooner mistakes are admitted the better chance there is to correct them. Mistakes have a way of emerging and coming to rest at the feet of those who make them and then try to dodge the bullet.

(Hopefully, mistakes don't occur too often.)

Job Tip 2: Say "thank you"

"Thank you" is a power-packed message. Everyone likes to help those who show their appreciation. But this simple act is too often overlooked in the rush of day-to-day activities.

A "thank you" doesn't have to be a big deal. Those two words spoken or conveyed with sincerity in a short note are enough.

Make a practice of expressing appreciation to at least one person each day. Thanks for sharing a bit of knowledge. Thanks for speaking up to support an idea. Thanks stopping a rumor before it gains traction. Thanks for being a good team mate. And, yes, thanks for holding the elevator or carrying a package.

Job Tip 3: Ask For Help

Contrary to popular belief, to ask for help is not a sign of weakness or lack of know-how. In fact, it is a show of strength and confidence. A request for help is a compliment to whom the request is made. It is the rare person who doesn't like to be asked for assistance. Obviously, getting help from others is a great way to improve one's base of knowledge and set of skills.

Job Tip 4: Share Credit For Success

Success with a single project or an entire career is seldom, if ever, a one-man show. Success is usually a team effort and there is always plenty of credit to be shared. No one likes or respects the "glory hot".

When you achieve success be sure to go public with credit to those who participated. If you have any doubt about the power of these actions just think about your own experiences. How do you react when you are exposed to any one of these positive forces?

Career Tip: The fact that these tactics are often overlooked creates an opportunity for those who put them to good use. Go ahead. Put a damper on your ego. Put these the tactics to work with sincerity and confidence. You'll see the pace of your career accelerate.

Do I need a new career? What should I do? HELP!!

I've been a hs math teacher for 3 years at 2 completely opposite schools. I dislike both. I hate enforcing the rules, being questioned by parents, and the politics of the administrators who don't know what's best for the kids. Im bored and not using any of my skills. Its not challenging and I wait for the bell to ring each day. I like/am good at drawing/sketching, math, interacting with people on a professional level, problem solving, and organization. I have a BA in both math and polisci and a masters in education. I don't want to keep teaching while I'm taking classes for a new job.

Yep you definitely need a career change. You aren't doing yourself any good and more importantly the kids your supposed to be teaching. Enforcing rules and being questioned by parents is common for a teacher and if you aren't able to handle those 2 then yep move on find another job. I know administration in each state and district is hard to deal with even schools that have kids out of control. As a teacher it is what you make it and more importantly how can YOU make a difference in the lives of the kids you come in contact with.

Careers After 50 - Jump Start Your Career Plan!

Careers After 50 - Jump Start Your Career Plan!

John Groth

Get ahead of the competition and prepare yourself for your career change opportunity.

In you career after 50 career plan how is your plan doing? Has the slowdown in the economy put your career plan on hold? Have things changed in your career that doors to opportunities have closed?

Now may be the time to jump-start your after 50 career plan. If you get to the point that you change careers you'll be ready to make the move on your terms and not have to accept second best because you lack some critical training or experience.

Here are four key ideas to jump-start your current career plan or keep your current career plan on track:

1. Get and Stay Current on Cutting Edge Skills: Education and learning can take many forms. From listening to the latest book of leadership on your commute to attending seminars and workshops-all are important to stay on the cutting edge.

Perhaps it is learning a new software application from a skilled IT friend or co-worker or attending a program sponsored by a career related group. Sometimes it's taking an evening or weekend class at a local college. It's all important to building your career plan and working toward your career change goals.

2. Achievements Count: Are you keeping a record of your achievements? Perhaps a letter of thanks from a customer or the head of another department or a written thank you from the chairman on the results of project you headed; all are important.

This file will be the bones of any resume you may write. Accomplishments count in any career move. This is what the prospective employer is looking for. Be prepared to be up the challenge.

3. Networking is the Juice to Jump Starting Your Career Plan: Don't overlook the value of networking. Whenever possible help others in their job searches.

Join a career related group or association. Help out on committees and other assignments. Keep a record of who you meet, and keep in touch. Join Linkedin and other social networking sites. They can be valuable in hooking up with like-minded individuals and in your ongoing career research.

4. Build Career Related Experience: In any career change work related experience can be a qualifying factor. However, if you have a full-time job in another career how do you build up this required experience?

First, it could be related work you do as a volunteer for a non-profit or career related association. Perhaps, it could be part-time work or work you contract for through contacts in your network. Or maybe you transition to an entry-level position in your chosen new career with an accelerated career path.

Another method others have used for good effect is to add to their education, as mentioned previously, to beef up their resume and qualify for the new position.

Use these four ideas to move ahead of your competition. While they keep their heads down and hope the roof won't fall in on them, you'll be looking to the future. Your skills will be increasing, your network of possible help will be expanding, your accomplishments will be listed and growing and you'll be moving to building the required levels of newly related experience-overall a winning combination.

Plan Your Home Based Career Now

Ramvie Santiago

A lot of moms are opting to work at the comfort of their homes. Aside from the fact that they need not spend so much money on their office wardrobe, they get to spend a lot of time with their children while maintaining their careers.

Follow these rules before you start with your home based careers:

1. Find quality child care. You can ask a relative to look after your kids while you are working at home or hire a trusted nanny. It is best to have someone you can trust to look after your kids.

2. Set up your own office at home. It is best to have a separate room for this purpose with a door which you can close when your work commences. You would not want any disruption while you are working, right?

3. Try to simulate a situation wherein you are pretending to leave home. As much as possible, make yourself presentable too as if you are working outside your house.

4. Condition your children that you may be around the house the whole day but you cannot attend to them because you are working in your home office. Tell them that a nanny will take care of them while you are inside your home office.

5. Make a schedule of your working hours. Acquaint your children with your schedule.

6. Tell your nanny to walk your children to the park in the village while you are working.

7. Set some rules regarding your child's behavior while you are working. You must make the necessary adjustment. Your kids must be accustomed to these changes if you want to attain a good working environment.

8. Talk to some moms who are working at home too. I am pretty sure that you can pick up some insights from them with regards to working at home.

Utah Jazz Career Point Scoring Leaders

Karl Malone

John Stockton

The Utah Jazz might appear to have a strange team name, but that?s because the franchise began play in 1974 as the New Orleans Jazz, and for whatever reason decided to keep the name when they moved to Salt Lake City in 1979.? The franchise has been in the postseason 23 times in their history, with no championships to their name, though they did lose to Michael Jordan?s Bulls in the finals twice in the late ?90?s.? Here is a short list of the Jazz? all-time leading scorers to date:

Karl Malone (36,374)?Forward Karl Malone, nicknamed ?The Mailman? because ?he delivers,? is one of the game?s all-time greats, and he ranks second all-time in scoring behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in NBA history.? Naturally, Malone leads the Jazz all-time as well with 36,374 points while playing for them from 1985 to 2003.? Malone scored over 2000 points an astounding twelve times, and his best season was 1989-90, when he scored a career best 2540 points (31 per game).? That season, Malone also led the NBA in free throws (696) and free throw attempts (913), and also had a career best .562 field goal percentage.?

John Stockton (19,711)?Guard John Stockton played for the Jazz his entire career, from 1985 to 2003, and teamed up with Malone to be one of the best 1-2 punches in NBA history.? Stockton ranks second in Jazz history with 19,711 points and he was steady, scoring over 1000 points eleven times, but led the NBA in assists nine times.? Stockton?s best season was 1990-91, when he scored a career high 1413 points (17 per game) and added a career best 1164 assists (an NBA record).? Stockton is also the NBA?s all-time leader with 15,806 assists.?

Adrian Dantley (13,635)?Forward/guard Adrian Dantley played for the Jazz from 1979 to 1986, and over that time racked up 13,635 points to rank third in franchise history.? Dantley had his best seasons in Utah, scoring over 2000 points for them four times, twice leading the NBA in total points scored (1980-81 and 1983-84).? But his best season was 1981-82, when he had a career high of 2457 points (30 points per game), which did not lead the league that year.? Dantley also hit a league best 648 free throws that season.?

Darrell Griffith (12,391)?Guard Darrell Griffith played for the Jazz his entire career, from 1980 to 1991, and he ranks fourth in the team?s history with 12,391 points scored.? Griffith scored over 1500 points five times, and his best season was 1984-85, when he tallied 1764 points (23 per game), and led the league with 92 three-point field goals.?

Thurl Bailey (9897)?Forward/center Thurl Bailey played for the Jazz most of his career, from 1983 to 1992, and then again in 1998-99.? Bailey ranks fifth in franchise history with 9897 points, and his best season was 1987-88, when he scored a career high 1604 points (20 points per game).?

How Do I Choose A Career Test?

How Do I Choose a Career Test?

The right career offers a good standard of living and lasting contentment. It's not secret that people who work in the area in which they do not like become unhappy and dissatisfied. People who do not like their work can often develop an attitude towards their responsibilities and work environment; eventually, this can lead to them losing their career growth stagnating and their continued unhappiness. Finding the right career however may take many years of searching after finishing college studies. Some people experiment with dozens of jobs reach a dilemma when they ultimately don't find the job that suits their skill set and interests. To reach the sought after goal of finding a career or job suited to you, I recommend you choose a career assessment and pinpoint the most ideal jobs for you.

Before taking a career test, you need to write down you hard skills and soft skills. Hard skills are commonly referred as what you majored in such as mathematical computations, project planning or computer programming, while soft skills are what extra skills you posses other than those things covered in your syllabus. Good interpersonal skills, world class personality, temperament, ability to rise to the occasion are some examples of favorable soft skills. Once you have a clear idea of your skills and experience, you are far more likely get the maximum benefit from a career test.

I considered some more factors when I took my career test. I decided whether I like working alone or working in groups. Some people love to be detail oriented while others are fast paced so this is also a factor one can consider. After taking the career choice test, I read the written answers and understood what my career test suggested me.

While taking the career test, you should answer very honestly to achieve most accurate results.

Once you done with your career test, you may compare with other tests such as aptitude tests and personality tests. This cross section will help you better understand yourself and your skill set. For example, when you get to know your personality type that can lead to discovery of greater depths of what your soft skills are. And the softer skilled person you are, often times the more successful employee you will become in many careers.

I found the internet is best way to choose a career test. There are thousands of websites where you can visit to choose a career test that will understand your soft skills while others may focus more on personality and interests. You can reach such websites searching using your favorite search engine.

You can better improve your soft skills and take more advantage of a career choice test if you also have an appointment with a career advisor to work through and discuss your career test results. If you are having a professional advisor to evaluate your answers, you will get most accurate analyze of your personality and skill set. And he or she can guide you to reach to a good career path.

You may ask your career advisor to provide you training program and coursework to help you easily achieve your career goals. The training program may include enrolling in an internship or joining for a course that will provide you with most up to date training in the kind of technology needed in your field.

Once you are done with everything, you should carefully consider careers presented to you. Sometimes, even most scientifically designed and operated career test result may not suit your passions in life.

Career Development - Three Most Common Mistakes That Young Professionals Make

Career Development - Three Most Common Mistakes That Young Professionals Make

Joseph Stutzman

Young-professionals can be commonly described as the most energetic, the most idealistic and the most creative group within the national workforce. However, these advantages can also be drawbacks. Here are the three most common mistakes that are made.

First, many are one-day millionaires. Because they usually do not have a lot of responsibilities in life, they sometimes forget to be financially responsible. Oftentimes, they live from paycheck to paycheck, even if they get to earn a lot.

This becomes a problem especially at those unforeseen times when they lose a job, or at worse case scenarios, when they get used to an excessively lavish lifestyle. They usually get saddled in debt, which take them years or even decades to pay off.

Second, many are too idealistic. Because they came out of university, where things are often black or white, right or wrong, a lot young-professionals usually do not know how to compromise. More often than not, this causes them to clash with their more senior co-workers which, in turn, prove to be counter productive not only for the company but also for themselves.

A young-professional must learn how to give way other people even if they do not necessarily agree to their arguments. This is an essential fact of life, as any long-lasting relationship relies on the ability of all concerned parties to accommodate each other's beliefs and principles.

Third, more than just compromising, they must know proper interpersonal decorum. This means knowing, or learning, how to communicate well with co-workers. One must not only be conscious of what he or she says, but also be wary of how other people receive it. Even the most well-meaning statements can come off as offensive to other people and these instances must be avoided at all costs.

Being a young-professional is all about initiating change, it's all about injecting new blood to an aging organization. However, they must also know how to play the corporate game, so that they can cause these changes in very accommodating environment.

Bill gets career advice

Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman, is seeking career help from his famous friends.

It was the end of an era at Microsoft, as Bill Gates called on some famous friends for career

advice during his final speech as Microsoft chairman.

What will he do next? Become a musician perhaps? Or try his hand at politics?

Gates, the man branded the world's richest tech nerd wants to be a rock star.

Bill Gates, Chairman, Microsoft, called Bono, U2 Lead Singer, for a job in his band.

But Bono says, "We are full up in the band, Bill."

Bono was one of the people the tech guru called on for career advice in his waggish final speech as Microsoft Chairman.

But when his prospects of rock-stardom looked dim he sounded out politics.

Next the tech guru called Senator Hillary Clinton, Democratic Presidential Candidate for advice.

But she said, "No, I know I haven't actually yet declared a running mate, Bill, but I'm not sure politics is really for you."

Senator Barack Obama, Democratic Presidential Candidate was his next target. But Obama can't recognise him. He thought it was Bill Shatner of Star Trek. After a word, he thought it was Bill Clinton, former President of US.

In July Gates will step down from Microsoft, a company he began from scratch to work at his charity foundation.

Gates in a speech to the media said, "This is my last keynote, and it's the middle of this year in July that I'll move from being a full time employee at Microsoft to working full time at the foundation, as you heard. So this will be the first time since I was 17 that I won't have my full time Microsoft job, and I'm not really sure what that last day is going to be like. It could be a bit strange. What do you do on your last day? So I asked some friends to help me prepare for that."

Some especially here in India would say he's already found his true calling in philanthropy.

Heard of affiliate marketing?

This is called affiliate marketing and has become a very big industry on the Internet. Many web sites offer affiliate programs that are free to join. To make money from affiliate programs you don't even need to have a web site, but it helps if you do have one.

An Update On Multimedia Home - Study Career PC Certification Training For MCSE Network Tech Support

Jason Kendall

As you've arrived here it's probable that either you're considering a career change into IT and you've heard good things about MCSE's, or you're currently an IT professional and you know that you can't get any further without the MCSE accreditation.

We'd recommend you confirm that your provider is actually training you on the latest Microsoft version. A number of trainees are left in a mess when they find that they've been studying for an outdated MCSE course which inevitably will have to be up-dated. Don't get bullied into a training program without the right advice. Take time to discover a training company that will spend time helping and advising you on an appropriate training track for meeting your goals.

We're regularly asked to explain why academic qualifications are being replaced by more commercial certificates? As we require increasingly more effective technological know-how, industry has of necessity moved to the specialised core-skills learning only available through the vendors themselves - namely companies such as Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and CompTIA. This often comes in at a fraction of the cost and time. Patently, an appropriate quantity of associated knowledge must be learned, but precise specialisation in the particular job function gives a vendor educated student a real head start.

Imagine if you were an employer - and you wanted someone who could provide a specific set of skills. What should you do: Pore through a mass of different academic qualifications from graduate applicants, asking for course details and which workplace skills they've mastered, or select a specialised number of commercial certifications that specifically match what you're looking for, and make your short-list from that. The interview is then more about the person and how they'll fit in - rather than on the depth of their technical knowledge.

Consider the following points in detail if you believe that over-used sales technique about examination guarantees seems like a good idea:

Patently it isn't free - you're still paying for it - the cost has just been rolled into the whole training package. People who take each progressive exam, funding them as they go are far more likely to pass first time. They are conscious of what they've paid and prepare more appropriately to make sure they're ready.

Sit the exam somewhere close to home and find the best deal for you at the time. Buying a course that includes payments for exam fees (and interest charges if you're borrowing money) is insane. Don't line companies bank accounts with extra money of yours simply to help their cash-flow! Many will hope you don't even take them all - then they'll keep the extra money. Also, you should consider what an 'exam guarantee' really means. Many training companies won't be prepared to pay again for an exam until you have demonstrated conclusively that you won't fail again.

Splashing out often many hundreds of pounds extra on an 'Exam Guarantee' is naive - when study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams is actually the key to your success.
