Career Management Defined

Career Management Defined

Career self-management is controlled by the concerned individual and includes certain plans and information applicable for future career decision-making and problem solving. It is comprised of continuously improving the existent conditions at the present work place and preparing yourself for a change. Career self-management and organizational career management are not restricted and can actually help to promote each other.

Common Misconceptions

Listed below are some of the common misconceptions about career management:

o Most people think that the most skilled candidate is likely to be selected. However, this is not true. Candidates with limited qualifications avail of a number of job opportunities because of the way they prepare and present themselves. In short, they self-market themselves in the required manner. Being skilled or qualified is not the only criteria. You must be able to convince the employer that you are the most suitable candidate for the job.

o Most people feel that as long as they already have a job, they don't really need to work on their careers. Again, this not true. Whether or not you are employed currently, you should be prepared for change, in whatever form. To steer clear of any career-related disasters, you should implement the concept of 'Perpetual Career Management' to enhance your career growth.

o Professional education should not stop when you graduate. You should always explore ways to increase your knowledge. You should be constantly updating your skills via journals, seminars and pursuing certifications. These choices should be a part of your consistent career development effort.

o Don't be under the misconception that your job is secure if you work hard and do a good job. With current mergers, outsourcing, downsizing and an unstable economy, there is no job that is entirely secure. You must be fully responsible for the future prospects of your chosen career.

What Graduates Have In Store For Them

Organizations in the United States and other developed countries have been following a trend of employing only the best university graduates to prepare them for future leadership within the organization. However, apprehensions about the proceeds in investing long-term in career development has led many organizations to wonder if this conventional stress on the management of graduate careers should be continued. Employers are now wondering whether they should promote self-management or whether they should continue with the traditional methods of career management.

Similarly, graduates are also faced with a problem. They need to decide whether they should engage in self-management or whether they need to adhere and prepare for the traditional methods already in use. Organizational commitment is important in shaping the responses to career development practices and in acting as chief indicators of the influence of these practices.

Nevertheless, there has been very little research done to sufficiently investigate the impact of career management practices, in spite of the evidence that these practices are capable of making a positive contribution.

Career Motivation

Career Motivation

How do you aquire career motivation? What should you do to boost your ambitions to advance in your profession? And how to stay motivated over a long period of time?

The people who love you can give you motivation

How does it feel to come home after a long and hard working day and be received like a King? You are met in the door by your spouse, your kids or closest friends whose eyes light up when they see you? They probably make you feel that the effort you have made during your working day was worth it, that this effort makes other people happy and you will probably feel encouraged to endeavour even more to make them even happier, because you see that they make you happy. Your closest personal relationship network is your base, the main purpose why you have a job or a profession. There's probably no better reason why you're working than for the happiness and security of the people who live together with you in your own 'nest'.

Your network of leisure peers can motivate you

Everybody needs leisure time, something outside the job and outside the home too. You need to socialize with acquaintances from time to time for sharing interest and hobbies or even partying with. These people and the activities you perform together have little or nothing to do with your job or profession. To enjoy hobbies like bridge or casino gambling, biking or riding, fishing or football together with people that have similar interest to you, motivates you to advance in your career because such activities satisfy a need that you have and that your career environment can't. If you don't take care of your entire person you will not feel well and your profession planning and advancement will also suffer. Therefore, having something outside your home and job that can take care of the parts of your personality that your home and job are not able to, is necessary for staying motivated in your job and profession.

Get motivation from your Professional mastermind group

You've probably been at various seminars and meetings inside as well as outside your work place. During the years you've been working you've also probably aquired lots of professional contacts like former coworkers and supervisors, college professors and other academic professionals, career counselors and other people like yourself, with the same background and education. This is your mastermind group and represents an invaluable resource for your profession advancement; professionals you can network with, discussing many topics that can be beneficial for everyone. Just by knowing that you have this resource-pool available is a significant motivating factor for you own career planning and development. Remember, each of us has something the other may need.

Your mentor equals your motivator

A personal mentor is probably the most career motivating person you can have. If you are able to get yourself a clever and trustworthy mentor don't hesitate, find one now. A mentor is a person who gives you advise regarding your profession issues. He or she coaches you and gives you support in your profession planning and development. He also introduces you to the people who can help you in building your career and assures that your profession is developing in the right direction. He helps you make a career plan, compares your progress with the plan, analyzes deviations of the plan and suggests actions to remain on track like participate in certain training and other profession development activities.

To summarize: To aquire and stay motivated about your career planning and development, you need awareness of your own responsibility, qualifications and credentials but most of all you need support from other people. Thus relationship building - not only in your work place and within your profession but outside that realm - is crucial for succeeding in your career.

Career Development: 20 Tips For The Young

Career Development: 20 Tips for the Young

If you're just starting out and want to get ahead, here are some ideas about what to do from a businessman who's watched decades of people come and go.
After watching careers for almost forty years, I've got a clear idea of what you should do to build yours. Here's some advice if you're starting out. 1. Seek and use feedback. Feedback will turbocharge your career and put you on the path to continuous improvement. 2. Get help. You can't know it all yourself. Get help from mentors, friends, peers, books, classes and role models. 3. Seek out challenges. That's how you grow. 4. At some point you will fail. It will be painful. Instead of sitting in the ashes of your life and shaking your fist at the sky, pick yourself up, learn from what happened and keep going. Ask my mother's favorite question for all challenges: "What good can we make of this?" 5. Build on your strengths and help others build on their strengths. Figure out what you do both well and joyfully. Do the same for your team. Spend your time on developing and using strengths. Make weaknesses irrelevant. 6. Admit your mistakes, graciously. Forgive the mistakes others make. Figure out how to move on and learn from experience. 7. Say "Thank you." Write thank-you notes. Send thank-you emails. People will remember you. 8. Learn to write lucid memoranda. You can't communicate if you can't write. 9. Learn to make good presentations. In today's world this is a requirement. Learn to marshal the research. Learn to tell relevant stories. 10. Help your boss and your employer look good. That's part of your job and it pays dividends over the course of a career. 11. Learn to keep your mouth shut when it's important. Don't discuss sensitive issues or your customer's business on your cell phone in a public place. Don't gossip. Keep sensitive documents secure. 12. Clarify expectations until they are crystalline. Make sure you understand what your boss wants from you. Make sure the people who work with you understand what you want. 13. Fight for the important stuff and give in gracefully otherwise. There are very few things in business or in life that are worth messing up a relationship for. 14. Develop habits and checklists that help you get the routine work done routinely and well. You will develop a reputation for reliability. 15. You don't know when an opportunity to stand out from the crowd will appear. Read and study and listen so that you're ready when a big opportunity comes your way. Create learning programs for yourself. 16. Ambition can be a driving force but it needn't be obvious and self-serving. It certainly needn't be aggressive. Let others become known for their ambition while you build a reputation for excellence. 17. Keep your promises. Nothing can destroy a career faster or more thoroughly than a reputation as untrustworthy. 18. Every day identify the most important thing you need to do. Then do it. 19. Work hard. Some people succeed without working hard, but some people win the lottery, too. Very few people achieve meaningful and lasting success without working hard. 20. When in doubt about what to do, act like the person you want to become. Remember that careers are built from the things you do every day. You're more likely to succeed in the long run if you take every opportunity to develop yourself, your skills, your friends, and your relationships. Good luck. Changing careers can be tough, especially when you have to write a cover letter and explain why you are changing careers. The main points to focus on are any skills that you are looking forward to using in a new career. You do not have to talk about anything that deals with your previous employer. If you have been taking night classes, tell the potential employer that you have new skills that you wish to put into use. A career change cover letter sample is below:

Career Development Planning

Careful and considered thought needs to be given to your Career Development Planning if you are to remain in control of it.

Are you aware of what you need? What growth? These could be very unlike from those that a manager or career advisor identifies for you. If you want to discover a career development model that works for you then you need to be aware of your own needs.

By taking stock of where you are at right now and where you want to be in say five months, years whatever, you will be capable to work out a development procedure that will help you to get there.

Make sure you are working towards your goals, not someone else?s. Are you in the driving seat of your career planning?

To join these two points you will want to see several significant events along the way. A series of small achievemnets lead to a significantly large outcome. Now you will notice the insufficiencies you have. This is a good thing as it lets you know what you have to overcome in your Career Development Plan.

it is unlikely you can reach your destination without a plan. loads of people wish they could change career or at least advance faster than they are presently doing, yet they will not put any effort into making this happen. it takes more than hope. It takes action.

With a plan you know what action to take and when to take it. You need a process to enable you to do this in a systematic fashion. So do not neglect your career plan and personality testing.

If you were to swap career for life you would definitely take things very significantly. Where do you spend most of your time? Most probably at work. So work plays a large part of our life, so we need to take it seriously.

This career development scheme is every bit as critical as our life idea. It should be of concern to us that we go through life without a scheme. Most people just wander through life and hope that everything will be fine. Hope is no substitute for a plan.

Some people complain about how life is working out and some have a plan. Which are you? They complain that they are in a dead end career and are just unlucky. They may be in a dead end work but chance does not have much to do with it.

To alter anything in your life it is you who has to do it and the 1st step in this change should be to establish a career plan that will at the very least stop you from drifting through life thinking if only things could be different.

Have you discovered what it is you should be doing yet? What actions have you agreed to undertake? At the very least find out how you go about creating a career development model and what you need to do to put a career development process in place.

With you plan in hand you will have taken the first steps towards changing your life. Career planning may be what it is called but think if you are spending extra time at work than anywhere else then this is life preparation too.

Tips On Choosing A Career Path

Tips on Choosing a Career Path

If you are a creative individual, finding a career field that you will prosper and be allowed to use your creativity can be hard. Custom furniture makers are a group of professionals that typically have a steady amount of work and are still allowed to be creative in their trade. By creating custom designed furniture, they are allowed to incorporate their personal style into a commodity that everyone needs to furnish their homes. Such a craftsman, however, would still be required in almost all cases to have attended some sort of trade school to learn the correct skills.

When choosing a career, it is important to really examine yourself before deciding on a field. In a lot of high schools, you are required to partake in some sort of career aptitude test. Though these can be somewhat revealing to what you may have a potential for, sometimes these tests do not consider the right aspects that would determine what you will be happy and successful doing. It is important to first consider whether or not you are cut out for further education.

If you cannot see yourself in a collegiate setting, you may want to consider a field that does not require secondary education. You could start looking into fields that require specific job training or even a field that requires trade school, which would be different that further education in a collegiate sense. If you are unsure on whether or not you think college would be right for you, you could consider going to a community college for awhile before considering going to a larger, expensive school. This would at least give you a preview of what college classes are like before paying expensive tuition.

If college does end up being the path you choose, there is a lot of preparation that needs to be done while still in high school. One of the first important steps is to make sure you take the standardized tests required by most universities, like the ACT and SAT. Most high schools will assist you with signing up for these standardized tests and may even offer prep courses so you walk into the test confident and ready. Once you have taken the test, you can have the scores sent to the universities that you are applying to. With the application process, there is a lot to consider as well. Most schools offer free or a reduced-priced application online to be more efficient than paper applications. Visiting the schools you are applying to is very important as well; then you can attempt to have some actual face time with an advisor at the school. Once you have sent in your applications, the hardest part starts, waiting.

No matter which path you decide to take, it is important to always consider and reconsider what is going to make you happiest. Just because everyone in your family has studied a certain subject or worked in a certain field, does not mean you cannot follow what you really want to do. It is easier to be aware of what you really want to do early, than to have to reconsider your choice once you are working in the field.

Translation As A Career

Translation As A Career

Translation should not be viewed as an activity that involves only word-by-word translation of text from one language to another. In actual practice, it involves moving the soul of a text into a different body. One of the best ways to improve your skills as a translator is to analyze the translation work done by other writers. This will give you an idea of the level of creativity required while executing the work as a professional. Always keep in mind that just like all other careers, it will take time to learn the craft and the business. You need to spend the first few years of your career in learning the nuances of the craft.

The advent of the internet has helped organizations to spread their tentacles outside the home markets. As a result, there is an acute shortage of foreign language translators for handling an organization's external communication needs in overseas markets. Success, however in these markets can only be achieved by gaining an in-depth understanding of the needs of the customers, which is only possible when you have a solid translation backbone. Translation, in our opinion is set to be a multi-billion dollar industry in the coming few decades. This is one of the reasons why many youngsters are opting for a career in translation.

When you embark on a translation career then it is advisable that you begin with dull, mundane subjects that are easier to translate as compared to challenging literary texts. Beginning with uninteresting but easier texts will help build up your confidence which will come in handy when faced with complex hard to understand text. Start with small companies, as they will be more willing to hire freshers. Try building up a career profile by working on every type of text. Once you have attained a certain degree of confidence you can target import export agencies for assignments. Working for these agencies will give you just the right exposure to develop yourself as a professional translator.

You can even work for multiple companies by choosing to operate as a freelancer. That way you can build a regular source of income by signing agreements with multiple agencies wherein you get paid for doing a certain amount of work every month. Once you have gained sufficient experience you can begin to charge more. If freelance work does not interest you then there are plenty of opportunities for experienced translators in government and non-government agencies, universities, training centers and multi-national companies.

Productivity and Motivation - The Unemployment Blues

Alex R l

So, how long has it been? Two months? Six months? A Year?! How do you keep your productivity and motivation up while you are trying to find your next great job? It isn't easy, but these tips may help:

1. Stay in a routine If you normally wake up at 6:30am to get ready for work, wake up at that same time and get ready for your day. Since I am most productive in the morning, I set aside time in the morning to search the job boards and send out resumes. I would usually block out 2 hours to apply for jobs. But, once that block of time is up, move on to something else. You will find if you spend much more that 2-3 hours applying for jobs you will inevitably butt up against the law of diminishing returns.

2. Treat it as a blessing in disguise It's not too often that you have the time to radically alter your life and bring about that positive change you've been yearning for. Take a hard look at where you are in life and where you want to be. This is a good time for some serious introspection. If you weren't happy at your last job, think critically about what is going to make you happy.

3. Learn a new skill Nothing makes me more motivated than learning something new, and there's always something new to learn! Don't only look for the monetary payoff. Learn something that will bring purpose and happiness to your life. (e.g., photography, programming, triathlon, etc...)

4. Get out of the house Go outside and be active to get inspired! Volunteer for a cause that has meaning to you. Another great way to get out of the house is to get on http://www.meetup.com and find people with like interests to have coffee with.

Career Selection

Career Selection

School days are one of the best days in one's life. One is not burdened with responsibility and has only one job to do - study and get good grades. As one advances into adult age, thinking of a career gets imperative. Because today the education arena has developed so far that training begins right after matriculation.

For instance graphic designing, gardening, bachelors in management studies, bachelors in mass media and many more are options one can immerse into just after school. If one opts to regular college, then after 2 years again there is sea of options. Engineering, medicine, management studies, clinical studies and so on. As these careers need a 10+2 education.

After graduating from a normal college that is 10+5 in India, one then has to make a decision as to which career he or she needs to plunge in. There are many careers that need a graduation as a minimum requirement these days.

But as a smart student like most of the new millennium, you should think of your career when you are in school itself. Make a case study of the various options available. Understand the market scenario. Just do not pick a career because your neighbour or your friend is doing so. Do your groundwork. There is a sea of knowledge you can dig into that is available on the internet books and the best source is your folks at home and your teachers.

If you are really interested they will help you dig and understand your personality and the job that will be best for you. For instance if you are an extrovert and love to travel then a desk job will bore you. You cannot be a librarian or an indoor worker. You would be good as a marketing person or a sales person. If you are good with people and love to be around new people and make new friends look into the Human Resources career. It would pacify you and keep you there.

Unlike people who jump jobs and careers because they are not happy with what they do. Hence understand your personality and you will be able to understand the career you want.

Career Book Review - 101 Best Ways to Land a Job in Troubled Times

Naomi Lolley

High unemployment and a tough job market are causing stress across the nation. Are you a job seeker wondering how you will land your next job, and whether it will be something that you will enjoy doing long-term?

A job transition doesn't have to be stressful, when you take the time to understand your dreams and goals, develop a plan, and stick with it for ultimate success. Not long ago, I had the opportunity of an exclusive interview with Jay Block, and his genuine concern for helping others was as evident in the interview as he writes about in this book:

"101 Best Ways to Land a Job in Troubled Time," by Jay Block, McGraw-Hill Publications, New York, New York, (2010), pp. 194, ISBN: 978-0-07166328-1.

The material in this book, written by best-selling author, Jay Block, is groundbreaking during this time of high unemployment during a tough job market. Jay interviewed and researched with experts across the nation when writing this book; and he discovered that most of what we know in the area of resumes and job search methods is ineffective and damages the future aspirations of job seekers!

He dedicates the book to all job seekers who have not given up on their dreams or settled for less than they can be; and inside the book he explains how to dream and achieve those dreams in their entire life, not just their career.

Jay's passion for really wanting to help people comes out clearly in this book, where he gives personal examples of the processes he completed in similar situations. The content is written to be informational as well as motivational, which is not something usually found in a career-transition book.

These strategic processes are outlined in five chapters of the book, in addition to his Introduction, which focuses on How Beliefs Affect Outcome.

The first chapter, Learning How to Ride the Emotional Roller-Coaster, helps job candidates recognize and manage their fears and emotions when adversity affects their world. Jay outlines ten principles for successfully obtaining a new job in troubled economies and four emotional channeling techniques to conquer the fearful, negative thoughts that job seekers typically have.

Other chapters address goal definition, writing and using the correct self-marketing tools, creating a meticulous action plan, and actually taking action.

Jay takes time to show examples of the correct marketing tools needed for today's job transition, which in and of itself makes the book valuable for a job seeker at any level. He also explains why a "chronological obituary" resume is detrimental during a job transition, and gives examples of resumes that are successful in today's economy.

Crooks Can Make a Career for Themselves After All

This book is based on morals and ethics. Who has them and who doesn't is the interesting part of this fast action financial thriller. Would you be able to tell a story being told as it was being told? There are many they can't and believe every word out of someone's mouth to be true. This is who they look for and that is the person that wants to pull the lever to the one arm bandit. I guess once you start reading this book "Miles Away...Worlds Apart" by Alan Sakowitz and figuring out what is going, the scams and deception, then you want to see where they mess up to get caught. They are very good at what they do.

A lawyer no less crooked from the start and why is that such a surprise. This story will have you turning the pages if anything to see when they get caught. You know that no scam is perfect and you may earn what to look out for if you have never encountered a person who lives by scamming people. You will enjoy this one. This would be a good discussion for your book club or for the lawyer in your family.

When you decide to scam someone or to become a scam artist at one point you life becomes real to you because you are playing a part. In order for it to become believable you have to act and feel what the person would be feeling. In the end you almost cannot tell who the real person is and who the actor is. This is the case that could be interpreted in this book. As the actor or schemer who honestly believes he is giving you good advice or a good deal. The good deal may be lining his pockets but that point is not the discussion.

If you have never heard of the term "Ponzi Scheme" they have been around for years. It is how to make a quick buck of the poor soul who believes you. It the person you see coming, the one your parents warned you about and yet you fall for it every time, they are that good. This book was very good and you will take some things away from the book.

Mack Brown's Coaching Career - What Every Footballer Dreams To Be

Abhishek Agarwal

Every footballer worth his while knows about the erstwhile Mack and dreams to acquire the skills Mack acquired during his time as a footballer. Mack Brown went on to become the best football coach the world may have known.

Mack's full name is William Mack Brown and he became fondly known as 'Mack' by the football world. Mack is presently the head of the football coach team at the University of Texas' Longhorn football team. Mack is known mainly for the victory of his football team at the Rose Bowl of the National Championship in the year 2005. During the year 2000 - 2006 Mack led his team through 10 victories. This victorious streak of 10 wins in a row has gone down in history as a record and is the best winning streak in the NCAA's history. Though Mack Brown shot to victory during this winning streak his coaching career began much earlier.

William Mack Brown was native to Cookeville, Tennessee and was a proud product of Putnam County High, the place he credits his love to foot ball to as did his father and grandfather before him did. During his student years Mack attended the University of Vanderbilt and went on to graduate from the Florida State University after which he started on his journey building his career as a football coach.

Mack started out as a student coach when a serious injury ended his ability to play the game any more. Mack took to coaching and promoting the game of football when he recovered. His career as a coach seems to have take off when he accepted the offer to take up a position as a wide receivers coach at Memphis state and after that moving to Iowa state. Recognition of his talents became apparent during his tenure as a quarterback coach at LSU in the year 1982.

It was after a series of victories that Mack was offered his first posting as a head coach with the Appalachian State. Mack's winning streak at this post is still talked about today. It was after this that he was offered a position as the coach at LSU but Mack wanted the head coach position, was refused and so joined the Oklahoma Sooners as an offensive coordinator.

One of Mack's players of better fame was Future Hall of Famer Troy Aikman. Mack worked wonders with his team and so his reputation was growing by leaps and bounds. It was during this time that Mack was offered his second posting as head coach. This time it was with Tulane in the year 1985. During his tenure here Mack made drastic changes and led the team to the finals of the Independence Bowl. Mack was the proud recipient of the "Paul Bear Bryant" award for Coach of the Year.

There has been no looking back for Mack and his achievements and awards keep flowing in year after year.

CNA to LVN - Carving Out a Career Path

Do entry-level positions matter to you? Do you want to be on top? Do you think you have the right qualities to move up to the next level in your career? Are you aiming for a higher salary? Are you hungry for more knowledge, new challenges, and new experiences? Or are you the type of person who is willing to excel in a gradual manner (slowly, but surely)? If you said 'yes' to any of the above questions, that's great! Success in your career of choice always begins by dreaming big!

Embarking upon a career path is not an easy task, especially in the medical field. However, those working in the medical industry find it to be a very rewarding job. It's a well-known fact that nurses are in demand at hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and other medical facilities. Thus, a good way to start pursuing a career in the medical field is to become a CNA.

What can you gain by becoming a CNA first, then pursuing the LVN or LPN career?

If you become a CNA first, your clinical exposure will be varied, diverse, and intense. You will gain a first-hand grasp of nursing care and you will thoroughly understand the nature of the work. Therefore, it is always good to have gained experience before attempting to advance and move up in healthcare industry. Being a CNA can be a stepping stone in your career to more advanced nursing care duties and further career growth. You can advance from being a CNA to become a LVN or LPN, then from a LVN/LPN to a RN. The scope and depth of CNAs' duties are limited, but by gaining work experience and clinical skills, you can become a better health worker. It is a good idea to continue your education to pave the way for bigger career opportunities, income, and responsibilities.

Want to become a LVN or LPN as your next career move? Why not?

A Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works under physicians and registered nurses. They act as a support for the ill, injured, and disabled patients or residents. Their work focuses more on giving injections, applying dressings, and observing residents for any adverse reactions to prescribed medications or treatments. They are involved in providing basic bedside care to the residents, taking vitals (temperature, blood pressure, polls, and respiration), and also supervise the nursing assistants.

How to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

To become a LVN, you must complete a state-approved LVN training program and pass the licensing exam called the N-CLEX PN. The course will typically take a year to complete. Education and training take place in classroom settings as well as in hospital or medical facilities for clinical practice. The compensation ranges from $16 - $25 per hour and approximately 24,000 - 48,000 US dollars (USD) per year, which will gradually increase based on your experience. The LVN career is growing and the demand for LVNs is increasing, as the supply of nurses comes up short. In a market where supply does not meet demand, the LVN salary is made even more competitive to attract more qualified nurses, thus increasing the supply.

LVNs usually work at hospitals, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, doctor's offices, or surgical centers, and provide many of basic services also performed by Registered Nurses (RNs). If you want to pursue this career, don't forget to contact the schools or colleges regarding the requirements of the course. Qualifications for the course vary from state to state. Many CNAs, who pursued a career as a LVN, are happy with their title, pay, and positions.
